No handshakes, please. Namaste.

March 02, 2020

As I write this, HIMSS2020 is set to proceed as scheduled, with additional precautions to prevent any possible risk of infection with the Coronavirus to the fifty thousand or so attendees. HIMSS has officially designated the event handshake-free. Read their complete update here.

In my latest podcast episode, Angela Yochem, EVP, Chief Digital and Technology Officer of Novant Health, discusses why digital care is not just about new models of care delivery using digital tools; it is also about enhancing traditional models of care delivery through digital means. She discusses how her team has developed approaches to identify and rapidly onboard innovative digital health solutions for high-impact areas such as stroke care. Angela advices health systems leaders to bring in people from outside of healthcare for diverse perspectives to improve healthcare with digital tools.

Dr. Rod Hochman, CEO of Providence Health, provides similar advice and points to how they are bringing in talent from consumer-oriented sectors to improve patient engagement with digital tools and technologies.

Data privacy and concerns around AI in healthcare continue to dominate headlines. A 2016 data-sharing contract between Google and UCSF, obtained by Stat News under a public information request, provides interesting insights into the safeguards being built into such agreements. Separately, a recent research report by Google indicates that anonymization of patient data through encryption can never be 100% effective.

See you all next week at HIMSS in sunny Orlando.
