My pick of the week is this moving CBS TV program titled Bravery and Hope which takes a look at 7 days inside the operations of the Montefiore Health System in New York. Located in the Bronx, Montefiore has had the highest number of COVID-19 cases in New York. It’s a must-watch.
Contact tracing has provided us a ray of hope in the fight against the spread of COVID-19. While contact tracing has been effective in several countries in Asia, it’s yet to catch on here in the U.S. Part of it has to do with privacy concerns around the sharing of location data, especially in the case of the much publicized Apple-Google collaboration (which health officials say is practically useless). At the other end of the spectrum, many startups are taking a run at building contact tracing apps. In the meantime, the demand for contact tracers is ballooning and is estimated at 200,000 and growing. Read this piece by an aspiring contact tracer on taking an online course to become one.
My podcast guest this week is Dr. Ram Raju, SVP and Community Health Investment Officer at Northwell Health in New York. Dr. Raju shares his deep concerns on the widening gaps in our two-tier healthcare system (the nation is going to see an increase of 8-15 million Medicaid enrollees in the wake of COVID-19). It’s a fascinating conversation with one of the most experienced healthcare executives in the country. Take a listen.
We welcome a new member to our Board of Advisors – Harry Fox, former CIO of CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield. You can read the announcement here.
